NEW YORK CITY in the1950s

THE POETRY OF FRANK O’HARA

In the 1950s, New York had usurped Paris as the art capital of the world.
Painters such as Jackson Pollack, Willem DeKooning and Larry Rivers defined
what was new and exciting in the world of art. Right in the middle of it all
was Frank O’Hara whose spirited, unpretentious, sometimes elegiac,
sometimes hilarious poetry captured the revolutionary and lively spirit of the time.
We’ll read from O’Hara’s famous Lunch Poems as well as go over the poet’s
very funny mock-manifesto, Personism.
